Oban North Pier Pontoons

Mariners are advised that dive operations in relation to the breakwater repairs have now concluded. Ongoing construction activities will continue on the breakwater structure; however, the finger pontoons are now open and available for use. Mariners are requested to navigate with caution in the vicinity of the breakwater and to comply with any instructions issued by harbour personnel.

NOTICE TO MARINERS

          Harbour/Pier:  North Pier Pontoons

Number:02/26

 Date of issue: 6th February 2026

Oban North Pier Pontoons

Mariners are advised that repair works to address damage sustained to the North Pier Pontoons breakwater will commence on Monday, 9 February for approximately 8 weeks.

Scope of Works

The planned works will include:

  • Uncoupling the pontoon units

  • Relocating and re-tensioning the units in their revised positions

  • Carrying out minor surface repairs

  • Replacing a bridge section

Operations will be supported by the surface vessel Grace Lamont.

Restrictions and Safety Measures

The North Pier Pontoons will remain closed for the duration of the works. Restrictions will also be in place at the Oban Times Slip to ensure the safety of personnel and to allow the works to proceed without interruption.

Mariners are requested to navigate with caution when operating in the vicinity of the North Pier and North Pier Pontoons. Please remain alert to warning flags and VHF safety broadcasts throughout the works period.

North Pier Pontoons

 

Following a dive inspection and initial repair work the finger pontoons are now open.

 

The breakwater sections will remain CLOSED for further investigation and repair works.

Harbour/Pier: North Pier Pontoons, Oban

Mariners are advised that following the Storm Eowyn on 24th January 2025, the North Pier Pontoons (including breakwater), will be temporarily closed.

Initial inspections have identified damage, and a full inspection and dive survey is required to ascertain the full extents of this.

A further Notice to Mariners will be issued once inspections have been completed.

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS No 2 of 2023

INTRODUCTION OF M.S. WATERCRAFT ORDER 2023

The above Order is designed to ensure that Owners and Operators of watercraft (including jet skis and other small craft ) in use in UK waters are held accountable for their acts or omissions whilst using their craft.

The Order states that the Sections of the Merchant Shipping Act which are designed to keep all persons in the water safe from accidents now apply to ALL powered watercraft as well as fishing vessels and ships.

In the Order the definition of a “watercraft” is any type of craft which:

  • Is capable of moving under its own mechanical power.

  • Is used, navigated or situated wholly or partly in or on water, and

  • Is capable of being used to carry one or more person(s).

The applied provisions include Sections 58 and 100 of the Merchant Shipping Act. As a result, unsafe use of watercraft could result in prosecution under the Act with the owner, user or operator of such craft being liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment of up to 2 years or an unlimited fine, or both.
